Julie Hartley is a Senior Associate in the Funds and Financial Services team at Hamilton Locke. She advises clients on niche areas such as discretionary mutuals and aggregate deductible schemes and assists underwriting and broking businesses in navigating the pitfalls of the AFS licensing process. She advises a broad range of financial services industry participants including insurance brokers, general insurers, underwriting agencies and insurtechs and negotiates commercial agreements. She also regularly provides regulatory advice on policy wordings and disclosure documents and provides practical guidance to clients on product design and development, the application of the deferred sales model and insurance distribution structures.
Prior to joining Hamilton Locke, Julie worked at The Fold Legal, which merged with Hamilton Locke on 1 September 2022. Julie has also worked at a commercial firm where she specialised in advising self-managed superfunds (SMSFs). She was highly regarded in this area and wrote a regular column in the Australian Financial Review on issues affecting SMSFs.

She is the Michael J Crouch Chair in Innovation at UNSW and serves as the Director of the UNSW Business AI Lab and Deputy Director of the UNSW AI Institute. The Business AI Lab is a pioneer in Business AI and the lab’s mission is to unlock the benefits of safe and responsible Business AI. see where the threats lie, and how they can play in the same field and with the same tools

As the technology lead on a number of AI/ML investments in VC and CVC environments,

Melissa has 25 years’ experience in the UK insurance sector, having previously been Executive Director of Professional Standards at the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), where she was responsible for data ethics, legal, risk management, corporate governance and policy and public affairs. Melissa chaired the Digital Ethics Forum and developed the CII Digital Ethics Companion, and was consulted by the UK Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation and the World Economic Forum. She has also been an Advisory Board member of Innovate UK, which provides R&D funding for start ups. She is a frequent contributor to the insurance press, a keynote speaker at conferences, and judge of industry awards.
Melissa has an extensive background in consumer insurance and legal issues. She was Senior Ombudsman at the Financial Ombudsman Service, a Director at Fairer Finance and served as a Tribunal Judge. She is also a qualified lawyer, spending her early career at Hogan Lovells, specialising in insurance law. In 2022, she co-authored Female Determination, a collection of portraits and interviews with inspiring women. She was a finalist for Insurance Woman of the Year in 2021.

Over the past five years, Christian has led the building of a company servicing domestic and international tech-first platforms such as Wise, Nium and a significant portion of the Australian digital-currency industry. To date, Monoova has processed $100bn through its API-driven solution. Christian has been a finalist for the ‘Outstanding Fintech Leader of the Year’ by Fintech Australia in 2020, 2021 & 2022.
Born in Sweden, Christian obtained a Master’s Degree in Economics, and a PhD in International Relations from Oxford University in the UK. Following a position as speech writer and economic advisor in the House of Lords in London, Christian moved to Zimbabwe to work as Chief of Staff at a Harare-based agricultural group with operations across Southern and Eastern Africa. Event Cancellation Policy

If after registering you are unable to attend, you are welcome to nominate someone else to attend in your place. If the substitute is not in the same membership category that was originally booked, ie. non-member or member, an additional fee may be due to reflect the correct rate for the substitute delegate to attend.
