The Australian Privacy Act is long-overdue for reform and recent significant data breaches impacting millions of Australians has brought this into sharp focus. The Federal Government’s long-awaited response to the Privacy Act Review Report confirms which of the 116 proposals for reform of Australia’s privacy legislation the Government intends to progress, those it will not progress and a number of proposals that require further consultation. The Government has committed to introducing a reform Bill in 2024. While the detail of the reforms is not yet known, the clear message from regulators is that regulated entities should start preparing now.
